- THE POSTAL CONSULTANT by MASTERWARE (C)1989 John G. Kacmarcik
- (RATES EFFECTIVE FEBRUARY 1991)
-
- Thank you for using The POSTAL CONSULTANT. I'm sure you will find it
- a very handy and useful program. Just place the disk in your disk drive
- and type POSTAL <Enter> and make your choices from the convenient
- menu.
-
- To install The POSTAL CONSULTANT on your hard drive, simply make a
- sub-directory of your choice and copy the files from The POSTAL
- CONSULTANT disk into it. When running the program, always change to
- the directory where you installed the POSTAL CONSULTANT.
-
- REGISTERED USERS can customize the zip code areas of the program. To do so
- obtain a copy of your local zone chart from the post office.
- Pick 'ZONE CHART ENTRY' from the main menu and follow the instructions.
- This version also does simple label printing with a database to store names
- and addresses.
-
- The POSTAL CONSULTANT is designed to run on the IBM PC XT, IBM Personal
- Computer AT, and other IBM-compatible microcomputers. The minimum
- computer memory required is 384K. Because computer memory is used
- as a working space during data manipulation, more memory usually
- results in increased processing speed. The processor sets aside a
- certain amount of computer memory as temporary working space. This
- temporary working space is reserved in blocks of RAM that are called
- BUFFERS. The more buffers you reserve, the faster processing is
- achieved. The total number of buffers is restricted by the amount of
- RAM available on the computer system. Because the POSTAL CONSULTANT program
- itself and the active data files used in the program compete with
- buffers for memory space, the number of buffers should NOT be set too
- high. With a minimum of 384K ram in the computer, you should be safe
- to designate 15 memory buffers.
-
- When settings other than the default are chosen, information about
- the number of files and the number of buffers is communicated to the
- computer through a file called CONFIG.SYS. Since this is a dBASE type
- program, I recommend your CONFIG.SYS have at least FILES=20 and
- BUFFERS=15. For more information on CONFIG.SYS consult your DOS manual.
-
- **When The POST OFFICE raises the rates again, an updated version will be
- available. When the time comes, just send your Original/Registered disk
- and $10.00 to MASTERWARE

- CHANGES AND NEW FEATURES:
-
- If you are registered, keep a record of your NAME, PHONE NUMBER and
- SERIAL NUMBER EXACTLY AS THEY APPEAR ON THE TITLE SCREEN. If in the
- future you see a later (ShareWare) version of this program on a BBS
- or wherever, download it and you can register it by typing the program
- name followed by the /REGISTER switch. (e.g. POSTAL /REGISTER)
- You can then enter your name, etc. and register the program at no
- additional cost to you! The shareware and registered EXE files are
- the same. Entering your registered information will turn off the
- shareware restrictions.
-
- *** NOTE *** THE BUILT IN REGISTRATION SCHEME WILL NOT WORK IF THE
- EXE FILE IS COMPRESSED WITH PKLITE or LZEXE. AFTER
- REGISTRATION, YOU CAN RUN AN EXE FILE COMPRESSOR ON
- THE PROGRAM IF YOU WISH. (PKLITE IS MOST RELIABLE)
-
-
- Also new to this version is that the text displays that used to be
- built in are now external DAT files! These files can be edited with
- just about any editor in the event of rate changes or additional
- information you may want to display. If you edit the DAT files, stay
- within the width of the existing text. This is necessary because the
- programs popup windows are tailored to the width of the original DAT
- file(s).
-
- If you have any problems, feel free to call me at 215-437-9668.
- If I am not in, just leave a message and I will get back to you as soon
- as possible. I can also be reached on the AVI/MASTERWARE BBS if you have
- a modem at 215-437-7085. Thanks again and Happy Computing!
-
- Sincerely,
-
